Amblyopia is a Greek word meaning “blunt or blurry vision”.
One should be aware of the fact that Amblyopia is a developmental disorder and not a disease of vision.
If not tackled in time, it remains as one of the most common cause of persistent unilateral visual impairment in adulthood. The affected person has to live with compromised Vision Related Quality of Life.

Amblyopia is clinically defined as decreased best-corrected visual acuity (VA) in one, or less frequently in both the eyes, even in the absence of any obvious structural anomalies or ocular disease.
In addition to the loss of acuity of vision, both the eyes may have multiple visual functions deficits which are essential in day to day life in the form of : a plethora of visual function deficits of the amblyopic eye, including -

Vision impairment, adversely affects the quality of adult life.
According to a recent article (2021) on blindness and vision impairment, young children with early onset of severe vision impairment can experience delayed motor, language, emotional, social and cognitive development, with lifelong consequences. School-age children with vision impairment can also experience lower levels of educational achievement.
Adults with impaired vision often have lower rates of work-force participation and productivity and higher rates of depression and anxiety. Low vision due to amblyopia / Lazy eyes not only affects visually dependent physical developments such as - sports activities, reading / writing speeds/skills, educational progress, but also confidence level and good jobs opportunities .
Thus, our precious, meritorious – 2 to 5 % new generation, may be thrown out of competition for class I Job, just because of the damaging label ‘Visually Unfit’
Good VA in each eye and /or normal stereo acuity are often prerequisite for careers in the military, aviation, surgery, law enforcement, firefighting, as well as obtaining a commercial driver’s license. Amblyopic individuals are often precluded from participating in such occupations.
